      Methods in Neuroscience

This is designed as a roving course that students take in their first year. Students move among all faculty laboratories to observe research methodologies. Students will write a research paper each term. The class is coordinated with graduate students rounds.

Human brain and spinal cord covered in detail. Development of the nervous system and brain dissection. Sensory and motor systems, including motor disorders. Overview of complex functions and special systems, including the basal forebrain cholinergic systems, the anatomical basis of neuroendocrine and central autonomic regulations. Anatomical organization of motivation, emotion, learning, and memory. Central nervous system vasculature and cerebrovascular diseases. Brain imaging techniques and comparison of such images with brain sections. Lectures>>

     Basal Forebrain: Anatomy to Funtion:

Lectures on current ideas about the anatomy of the basal forebrain cholinergic system, as well as its involvement in different functions, such as sensory processing, attention, learning and memory. Role of the forebrain in certain neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease

An important goal of this course is to familiarize the students with functionally relevant anatomical features, and to get an insight of how dynamic interactions among specific neuronal systems contribute to cognitive and sensorimotor processing. Readings draw from classical papers in the field and short papers, discussing current research trends, media coverage, and movies of brain-behavior-mind issues.
